The 5 Box Method
With this simple-to-follow method and a little willpower, it is possible to conquer the clutter in your home. Start by finding 5 boxes and label them with these 5 categories:
KEEP
This box is for the items that you need or use on a regular basis. Only keep what you have a place for – A place for everything, everything in it’s place. If you do not have a place for all of these items, go back through and reassess your need for each item. If needed, create a storage solution that fits the space without clutter.
DONATE
Think about how someone else might get use out of these items versus the use it gets in your home buried in cabinets or closets. These items should be in good condition and worth giving to your favorite charity.
SELL
These items should be in good condition and worth more than it would cost to organize the sale. If you know you’re unlikely to get around to it – DONATE IT!
STORE
These are the items that you do not use regularly but cannot part with. Only keep what you have the available storage space for.
TRASH
These are the items you do not need or want, and do not meet the selling or donating standards. Damaged and broken items should be trashed. Do not hold on to items you know you will never get around to fixing, selling or donating.
The Method
Work room by room and focus on one item at a time and determine its proper place. When you come to a stopping point, be sure to throw out the trash immediately. Close up the storage boxes and place the donate/sell boxes in the garage, or out of sight.
