Maintaining your home’s water heater can extend its life and help it work efficiently. One way to ensure it runs at peak performance is to flush it out. This process cleans away sediment that collects inside the water tank and can be performed in a few simple steps. 

Cut the Power 

It is vital to your safety that you turn off the power to your water tank before performing the flush. Turn off the circuits to the room where you have your heater, or snuff out the pilot light. While the tank cools, you can collect a few tools you will need to complete the flush, including rubber gloves, a garden hose, and a screwdriver. 

Connect the Hose 

Locate the drain valve on your water heater and connect one end of the hose there. Remember to wear the gloves. Set the other end of the hose into a large bucket or drainage ditch outside to collect the excess water and sediment. Once the hose is secure, turn the valve back on and allow the water to drain. 

Perform the Flush Several Times 

Once the water drains for a minute, go to the kitchen and run the hot water faucet for a few moments to help the tank empty. Then you can close the water supply valve again until the draining stops. You can perform the water heater flush several times. Remember to close valves on the heater before you turn the water supply back on, then run the faucet until it stops spitting air and runs smoothly before you restore the main power to the heater.
