Mold Growth in the Winter for Drexel Hill, PA Homes

1/14/2022 (Permalink)

Close up of a white window sill with condensation and mold growing along the pane and the frame SERVPRO of Upper Darby has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

The lack of moisture in the cold air leads people to believe they don’t have to worry about mold growth during the winter. There are several factors that lead to increased concerns about mold during the winter months.

Water Damage

A leaking pipes or roof can create a constant source of moisture in your home. If you find a leak, get it repaired immediately. Mold may compound the problem if the moisture problem is not addressed immediately.

Turning Up the Heat

During the winter months our homes are sealed up tight to keep the warm air in. The warm air is unable to leave your home, the trapped moisture and condensation from the increased humidity creates a perfect atmosphere for mold growth. Differences in relative humidity throughout the house can also increase the chances of mold growth.

Using Humidifiers

Due to the dry air during the winter, there is a high use of humidifiers. Having moisture in the air can be helpful but if you aren’t careful, the over using of a humidifier can cause mold growth. To avoid any issues use them in moderation.

Lack of Ventilation

Indoor air is typically drier overall during the winter months but certain areas of the home may experience intensified levels of humidity due to a lack of ventilation. Kitchens and bathrooms are particularly susceptible to this issue. Something as little as steam from the shower, sink or stove can create a big problem. During cold weather, windows are closed tightly and condensation collects on indoor surfaces such as cold walls or windows and frames. This moisture creates an ideal conditions for mold growth in winter.

Identifying the Source of the Mold

Moisture conditions indoors can lead to the growth of mold and mildew. The best way to control mold growth is to control moisture. It’s crucial to identify the source of the moisture and remedy the problem at the source. For instance, if you discover mold under your sink due to a leaking pipe repair the pipe or shut the water off to the sink. You may not notice mold growth in certain area, this does not mean that mold isn’t present or that it won’t grow if you don’t take action.

Reduce Humidity

Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity. Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50) instrument available at many hardware stores. Actions you can take to reduce humidity are:

  • Vent appliances that produce moisture, such as clothes dryers, stoves, and kerosene heaters to the outside where possible. (Combustion appliances such as stoves and kerosene heaters produce water vapor and will increase the humidity unless vented to the outside.)
  • Use air de-humidifiers when needed.
  • Run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering. Use exhaust fans or open windows whenever cooking, running the dishwasher or dishwashing, etc.

Reduce Condensation

If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes act quickly to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity. Actions you can take to reduce condensation are:

  • Reduce the humidity.
  • Increase ventilation or air movement by opening doors and/or windows, when practical. Use fans as needed.
  • Make sure walls are well-insulated
  • Cover cold surfaces, such as cold water pipes, with insulation.
  • Increase air temperature.

Magnifying glass over a homeowner's insurance policy SERVPRO of Upper Darby has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

After dealing with water damage in their homes, many homeowners discover they have a mold issue.  Unfortunately, homeowner’s insurance doesn’t always cover mold growth. To get full mold coverage, you may need individual mold insurance. Here’s what every homeowner should know about mold and insurance.

Mold Is Not Covered in Standard Policies

If you purchased a standard insurance policy for your home, chances are that your insurance won’t cover the cost for repairs needed due to mold growth. Under a standard plan mold growth is consider to be a home maintenance issue, which these policies don’t cover. However, mold caused by an insurable peril, may be covered.

Secondary Mold May Be Covered

While most home insurance policies don’t cover the cost to get rid of mold when fungus is the primary problem, you may be covered if the mold is results from a different issue. For instance, if a pipe bursts in your home and causes mold growth, your homeowner’s insurance may cover the cost of repairs.

Flood Insurance May Provide Coverage

Surprisingly, flooding caused by rain is not covered by standard homeowner’s insurance policies. If a storm causes mold in your home and you have flood insurance, the policy will likely pay out for mold removal.

You Can Prevent Mold Growth

The best strategy may be to prevent mold altogether. While this is not always possible, here are things you can do to guard your home against the fungus:

  • Leave carpets out of the basement, bathrooms, and kitchen
  • Use bleach to clean your bathrooms
  • Use exhaust fans in your bathrooms and kitchen
  • Clean gutters regularly

4 Ways To Reduce Christmas Tree Mold Levels

12/23/2019 (Permalink)

Christmas tree with a mushroom ornament Safe holidays are happy holidays!

Live Christmas trees may bring more than the fresh pine scent of the holiday season into homes.  With most trees cut in advance of the holidays and stored in a moist environment for fresh keeping, this makes them a likely mold source.

Here are a few tips to help you cut the Christmas mold level in your home, without giving up the fresh tree:

Limit the Time You Leave Your Tree Up

The longer the tree is inside of your home, the higher the mold level may be.  If those in your household are prone to mold allergies, but don’t want to give up the fresh Christmas tree, consider putting the tree up Christmas Eve and taking it down on New Year’s Day.  Try to keep a live tree in your home between 4-7 days at maximum.

Wash Your Tree

Before bringing the freshly cut tree inside of your home, wash it first using the garden hose.  Set the nozzle to a hard-spray level to get into all of those little nooks and crannies of the trunk.  Then, wipe the trunk thoroughly with a solution of warm water and bleach (1 part bleach to 20 parts water).  Let it dry in the sun before bringing it inside of your home.

Use an Air Purifier

Run an air purifier in the same room as the fresh tree.  Cleaner air is key during the holidays, and helps to reduce your mold exposure and lessen the effects of your tree allergies.

Go Fake

The best way to avoid the mold infestation is to buy an artificial tree.  Unless you store your artificial tree inside of a sealed plastic bag, it will still need a good shaking outside when it’s brought out of storage each year to relieve it of dust.  Also, store all of your Christmas ornaments and decorations in plastic containers (instead of cardboard ones) to keep the dust off of them.

If you see signs of mold, call SERVPRO of Upper Darby – (610) 352-0700

How to Avoid Mold Growth in Your Bathroom

4/27/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Upper Darby has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Bathroom Cleaning Routine That Will Help You Avoid Mold Growth

Bathrooms are the least favorite room for homeowners to clean. However, dust, dirt, grime, and moisture sitting on your bathroom surfaces can lead to mold and mildew. So, why avoid the cleanup and put your family’s health at risk? Bathrooms should be cleaned weekly, but there’s also little things that can be done daily that can help make that weekly cleanup seem less daunting.

Daily Bathroom Cleaning Routine:

  • After a shower, squeegee your tiles to remove the excess water
  • Keep the shower stall door or curtains open after a shower for at least 10 minutes to help exhaust the humidity that has built up inside
  • Close the shower curtains afterwards to help dry them so moisture doesn’t get trapped when they are bunched up when closed
  • Empty garbage bins every other day. Think of what gets thrown out: wet naps, damp paper towels, Kleenexes, tissue paper, etc. After a few days, your garbage bin can start to get musty and moldy
  • Hang towels right away after a bath or shower. Leaving them on the floor can lead to musty odors
  • Run your exhaust fans or open windows during your shower and keep them open/on afterwards for at least 20 minutes

Weekly Bathroom Cleaning Routine:

As a result, the main objective is to keep moisture levels to a minimum

  • Toilet bowls
  • Shower head; build-up can occur causing mold and clogging, preventing you from having a relaxing shower experience.
  • Counters and sinks
  • Walls and floors; dust, grime, hair is mold food when left on surfaces for too long
  • Shower mats
  • Replace hand and bath towels with fresh, clean linens
  • Mirrors
  • Door handles, faucets can hold onto bacteria

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Mold Remediation FAQ

11/6/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Upper Darby understands mold and mold growth and has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

What is Mold?

Mold is a naturally occurring fungus. It’s present in all kinds of environments, both indoors and outdoors. Mold spores are microscopic and spread through the air, which makes it easy for mold to grow. The best environment for mold growth is a dark, warm, and humid room. We often see the need for mold remediation in rooms where a source of water is introduced, like kitchens, bathrooms, attics, and laundry rooms.

Does Mold Removal Take Care of All Mold?

100% mold removal is not possible. Since mold is a natural part of our environment, removing it completely is an impossible task. Although most people think “mold removal” is what happens when they have a cleanup, the better term is mold remediation.” Mold remediation companies eliminate a large amount of mold to make the environment safe and healthy again for habitation.

What Happens in a Mold Inspection?

Every mold remediation company works differently. At SERVPRO of Upper Darby, we provide mold assessments and estimate. Here is our process:

  • When you call us, we schedule a time to inspect your property.
  • One of our mold remediation specialists will inspect your property. He or she will look for the usual hot spots and ask you about your property’s history with water damages, roof damage, and anything that will help pinpoint where mold may be growing.
  • If we find mold, we will take photos along with measurements. Shortly afterward, we’ll present you with an estimate to remediate your mold.
  • Sometimes, the problem isn’t mold but something else. No matter the cause, we will do our best to help you solve the problem.

Do I Need Mold Testing?

Few people really need to know the exact type of mold found on their property. All mold remediation is treated with the same level of caution and care, and knowing the type of mold present will not change our procedure. Unless you have a specific medical or personal need to know the type of mold, we don’t require mold testing. If you do request mold testing, we can recommend a licensed Industrial Hygienist.

How Much Does Mold Remediation Cost?

It’s important for us to perform a mold inspection at your property to give you an accurate estimate. The cost of remediation will depend on the size and scope of the mold. Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby to schedule a mold assessment and estimate

Do You Remove Black Mold?

Yes, we have successfully removed black mold in many homes and businesses.

Does Bleach Kill Mold?

Bleach damages the mold’s structure. However, mold remediation is not as easy as grabbing a bottle of bleach and doing your own cleanup.  In fact, DIY mold removal projects involving bleach often causes the accidental spread of mold spores.

What Do I Do If There’s Mold in Apartment?

If you find mold in your apartment, ask your landlord if you or the apartment complex is responsible for the cost of mold remediation. We’re asked this question often, but only your landlord can provide the answer. Ask to see your rental agreement and how damages like these are covered.

Why Choose SERVPRO of Upper Darby?

How to Clean Up Attic Mold

10/31/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Upper Darby specializes in mold damage restoration, with advanced training in restoration techniques.

You might not think much of mold in your attic, since it’s outside your living area. However, it can still wreak havoc. For example, if you’re storing anything in the attic, mold growth could destroy it. Mold also rots wood and can damage your roof, undermining your home’s structural integrity. Additionally, if you’re looking to sell your home, any visible mold could instantly derail the sale.

Why Does Mold Grow in the Attic?

The underside of roof sheathing and attic insulation are some of the most susceptible areas for mold growth. This is due to:

  • Water incursion from a roof or siding leak that has yet to be repaired
  • Improperly installed or insufficient insulation that allows heat and moisture to rise from your home into the attic
  • Inadequate attic ventilation that allows the attic to heat up and fails to dry up any accumulated moisture
  • Incorrect venting from bathrooms, clothes dryers, and kitchen range hoods that send warm, moist air into the attic instead of outside.

Tips to Clean Up Attic Mold

If you see mold growth in your attic, your first step is to assess the moisture problem that caused the mold growth and correct it. Without this initial step, you’ll need additional mold remediation in the future. In many cases, you’ll need the help of a professional to determine the cause of the leak and the best way to fix it.

Next, try one or more of these recommended mold removal methods:

  • Sand or wire-brush the mold away, vacuum up the debris, wipe down all surfaces with a detergent, and finish with a sealant. This is most effective if there’s little staining or mold penetration.
  • Blast the mold away by spraying it with dry ice particles, sand, soda, corn cobs, walnut shells, or glass beads in a pressurized stream. Use this method in tight spaces without fear of damaging the wood’s structural integrity.
  • Treat the affected areas with anti-microbial chemicals to kill the mold. This method isn’t always recommended, and it may require a pesticide applicator’s license.
  • Remove and replace all affected materials if structural integrity has been compromised.

Many of these attic mold removal methods are difficult or impossible without the help of a professional. At SERVPRO of Upper Darby, we’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help you restore your home or commercial property.

Professional Mold Remediation

Here’s why you should leave mold remediation to the professionals at SERVPRO of Upper Darby:

Attic mold removal is difficult

Mold growing on rafters, trusses, or sheathing in the attic is extremely difficult for a layperson to remove. This is because of poor access, tight quarters, uncomfortable temperatures, and unsafe working conditions caused by exposed insulation and roofing nails. Professionals have the tools and experience to perform the job to your expectations.

Post-remediation testing puts your mind at ease

If any mold remains, it can spread. How will you know if the mold was removed completely? Professional testing can tell you whether adequate cleanup was achieved.

Personal protective equipment is important

Do you have the gear to protect yourself against harmful mold exposure? At minimum, professionals use an N95 respirator and eye, hand, and clothing protection.

To make use of today’s best mold removal technology and begin the cleanup process without delay, please contact SERVPRO of Upper Darby. With our help, it’ll be “Like it never even happened.”

Safety Gear Used During Mold Remediation

10/29/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Upper Darby understands mold and mold growth and has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

If you’ve found mold in your Wayne, Pennsylvania home, you may wonder what to do next. You may be tempted to take care of the problem yourself, but unless you’re a professional, you might not know the proper procedures or have the right equipment. In addition, you might not have the right gear to protect yourself. Mold remediation professionals have safety top-of-mind.

Below is the protective equipment that most experts use.

Face Masks

Safety masks play a major role in mold cleanup. These devices help keep mold spores from entering the lungs. Depending on the job at hand, remediation teams may use full-face or half-face respirators.

Gloves

Mold can cling to hands. Workers must wear gloves to ensure spores aren’t spread to other areas of your home or other customers’ homes.

Eye Protection

This protective equipment is needed only if the crew uses face masks that don't cover the eyes. Goggles can protect the eyes from debris related to mold removal.

Coveralls

Fungus can also cling to clothing, which is how it travels from location to location. Many professionals wear special coveralls that are washed after each job to limit the spread of mold.

Shoe Coverings

Some coveralls may come with attached boots, but when this is not the case, shoe coverings are needed. The coverings act as a barrier between the workers and the rest of your home, because workers remove the gear before leaving the infested area.

Protective equipment, like face masks and body coverings, are used to not only protect the person handling the mold but also to protect the rest of your home. If you want to properly remove mold, hire a team that uses proper safety gear—and knows how to do the job right.

Staying Ahead of Mold Damage After a Flood in Drexel Hill

10/23/2018 (Permalink)

If You See Signs of Mold After Flooding in Drexel Hill, Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby – (610) 352-0700

Did you know that within 24 to 48 hours, mold can begin to grow in flood-affected areas? Mold grows quickly when there is standing water, and even without mold, you have to worry about the proliferation of bacteria in standing water and gray water. To get ahead of mold damage, you need a reactive, responsive plan for restoring your property.

Move Fast

Don’t delay cleaning up after a flood. In particular, don’t delay cleaning up water. Mold growth depends on water, and without moisture, it will have nothing to feed on. Make water removal your first step in your cleanup plan, and initiate removal as soon as your property is safe to enter.

Be Aggressive

You may be tempted to try milder methods, wait, and then try something more aggressive. By that time, mold will have already had a chance to set in and will be even harder to get rid of. Use the most effective methods first. As long as you aren’t damaging the interior of your property, you’re better off going in with stronger cleansers and cleaning equipment.

Be Thorough

Don’t leave a single corner untouched. Mold thrives in nooks and crevices, where it’s undetected and out of the sunlight. Check every last crack.

Be Safe

No matter how worried you are about mold growth, be safe when handling your flood restoration and cleaning. If you don’t trust yourself to handle the equipment and chemicals needed to appropriately siphon away water and eliminate mold, contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Upper Darby or enlist help from others. Always work in a well-ventilated place, wear protective gear, and avoid contact with hazardous substances, black water, sharp edges, or exposed electrical wires. Follow our tips outlined in the Water Damage Tips—Until Help Arrives Guide to protect yourself and your property.

Can I Just Wait for Mold to Die?

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

If You See Signs of Mold, Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby Today – (610) 352-0700

Because mold is a living organism like any other, you may hope that mold will eventually die off on its own and leave you with a clean, mold-free home. But mold, particularly black mold, is far more dangerous than you think. If you want to rid your home of mold, you need to understand why the waiting game is one you’ll always lose.

Mold Is Everywhere

Just because you can’t see mold doesn’t mean it’s not there. Even if you don’t have mold growing on single surface in your home, the air is still riddled with spores just looking for the right conditions to take root. It’s also likely that if you had a mold problem once, you’ll have it again. Even if your home is dry, you’ll still find mold popping up in places like:

  • Dark, damp corners in bathrooms, storage rooms, and basements
  • Drywall and the interiors of walls
  • Underneath linoleum and vinyl flooring
  • In wooden flooring, door frames, and window frames
  • In your furniture and curtains
  • In and behind wallpaper

Even if it’s not prominent, you may still have mold hidden somewhere within your home. Watch for signs of black mold, including creeping, fuzzy growths.

You Won’t Fix Your Problem if You Don’t Address the Source

Mold cleanup isn’t enough if you don’t address that you likely have a moisture problem. Moisture is the root of all issues with black mold, whether it’s from flooding, an overly humid environment, or leaky roofs, windows, and appliances. Hiring a mold remediation specialist can help you pinpoint the source of your moisture issue, take steps to eliminate it, and fully dry out your house. A specialist can also help remove the threat of another mold outbreak in your home.

Christmas Tree Mold Is Real!

Safe holidays are happy holidays!

4 Ways To Reduce Christmas Tree Mold Levels

Live Christmas trees may bring more than the fresh pine scent of the holiday season into homes.  With most trees cut in advance of the holidays and stored in a moist environment for fresh keeping, this makes them a likely mold source.

Here are a few tips to help you cut the Christmas mold level in your home, without giving up the fresh tree:

  1. Use an Air Purifier

Run an air purifier in the same room as the fresh tree.  Cleaner air is key during the holidays, and helps to reduce your mold exposure and lessen the effects of your tree allergies.

The Main Differences Between Mold And Mildew

12/14/2017 (Permalink)

If You See Signs of Mold, Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby Today – (610) 352-0700

Mold and Mildew Are Both Types of Fungi That Are Commonly Found in the Home.

They thrive in moist environments, spread easily, and live on various surfaces which makes them very difficult to get rid of. If left unattended, however, the harmful microorganisms can quickly affect large areas of your property and may even result in health problems and structural damage. While the two types of fungi share many common features, they pose different risks and respond to different treatment.

So, in order to come up with an efficient cleaning strategy and ensure the safety of your living environment, you need to understand the difference between mold and mildew.

What Is The Difference Between Mold And Mildew?

Mildew can be described as a specific type of mold. Mold is a fungus that contains multiple identical nuclei and grows in the form of black or green patches which penetrate beneath the surface of the affected material. Mildew, on the other hand, has flat growth that remains on the surface where it can be easily removed. While mold usually grows on food or inside permanent structures, such as walls and crawl spaces, mildew is to be found on damp surfaces, paper, fabrics, and various organic materials in your home.

Common Mildew Types

Primarily, mildew is a plant disease that causes great damage to crops and plants. It is classified as powdery and downy:

Powdery Mildew

Mainly affects flowering plants and first appears as white or gray patterned splotches that gradually become yellowish brown or black as the fungus grows

Downy Mildew

Commonly found in agricultural products, such as grapes and potatoes. Its appearance varies depending on the type of surface it grows on, but usually downy mildew starts as yellow spots that eventually turn brown.

Common Mold Types

Although the number of mold species that can live indoors exceeds 10,000, most household molds belong to one of the following five types:

Alternaria

Grows on walls, in showers, around windows, under sinks and in various other damp places. It is often found in buildings that have suffered some kind of water damage. Alternaria mold can appear black, grey, or dark brown and has a wooly or down-like texture.

Aspergillus

The most common type of mold found indoors. It can look grey, brown, yellow, green, white, or black. Aspergillus mold usually grows on walls, insulation, paper products, and clothing.

Cladosporium

Unlike many other molds,Cladosporium can grow in cool areas. It usually appears on fabrics, such as carpets or curtains, and on wood surfaces, like cabinets and floorboards. It has a characteristic black or olive-green color and can cause a variety of respiratory problems.

Penicillium

Can be found on various materials that have been in contact with water, including carpeting, wallpaper, insulation, and mattresses. It looks blue or green and produces strong musty odors. Penicillium spores spread very easily.

Stachybotrys Chartarum

Is often referred to as “black mold” because of its color, is the most dangerous kind of household mold – it produces toxic compounds called mycotoxins that can cause severe health problems. The toxic black mold has a characteristic musty odor and usually grows in areas that are constantly damp – around leaky pipes, inside air conditioning ducts where there is a lot of condensation, etc.

How To Tell The Difference Between Mold And Mildew?

There are several crucial differences in the appearance and properties of mold and mildew that will help you recognize the type of indoor fungi you have discovered in your home:

Differences in Appearance

Typically, mold appears black or green while mildew looks gray or white. Yet, there are some more detailed specifics in the appearance of the fungi:

Mildew

Usually grows in a flat pattern and appears either powdery or fluffy. It can be easily identified as a patch of white, gray, or yellowish fungus that is lying on the surface of a moist area. Mildew usually turns black or brown over time.

Mold

Usually fuzzy or slimy in appearance. It appears as irregularly shaped spots that can have different colors – blue, green, yellow, brown, gray, black, or white. Oftentimes, surfaces that are covered in mold begin to rot.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA Today – (610) 352-0700

Differences in the Effects

Both mold and mildew need to be taken care of in a quick and efficient manner as they can cause a lot of trouble over time:

Mildew

Usually affects plants and crops. If it develops indoors, however, it can also pose health risks.

Mold

Can result in considerable structural damage when left unattended for a long time. Prolonged exposure can cause a variety of health problems, depending on the strain of mold.

How to Prevent Mold and Mildew

The most efficient way to prevent mold and mildew in your home is to keep all the areas dry and moisture-free. Maintain a humidity level of about 40-50% inside the house (a dehumidifier provides the most advantageous solution for ensuring appropriate indoor humidity), have your heating and cooling systems regularly inspected, keep air ducts clean and in good condition, ensure good air circulation inside the premises, fix any leaks in the bathroom, kitchen or other areas.. Remove any mildew-affected plants and weeds as soon as you notice them in order to prevent mildew infestation.

How to Clean Mold and Mildew

The safest and most efficient way to get rid of a mold and mildew problem is to call a SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA.  Our highly trained professionals will come to your home to assess the situation and determine the extent of the damage and appropriate actions.

Mildew

A surface fungus that can be efficiently treated with a commercially available cleaner and a scrubbing brush. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a facial mask to prevent inhaling mildew spores, as well as to avoid breathing in fumes given off by the cleaning product you use. Clean all the surrounding areas carefully as well, to ensure that all the fungi have been successfully removed.

Mold

Mold, on the other hand, attaches to the affected materials with microscopic filaments that penetrate beneath the surface. The mold spores spread very easily and can quickly affect large areas of your property and result in permanent damage. Despite its characteristic musty smell, mold is only visible to the eye when the colonies start growing, so early detection and prevention is very difficult. Mold can have a very negative impact on your health, so DIY removal attempts are not recommendable.

Common Moisture Sources Found in Schools

Moisture problems in school buildings can be caused by a variety of conditions, including roof and plumbing leaks, condensation and excess humidity.  Some moisture problems in schools have been linked to changes in building construction practices during the past twenty to thirty years.  These changes have resulted in more tightly sealed buildings that may not allow moisture to escape easily.  Moisture problems in schools are also associated with delayed or insufficient maintenance, due to budget and other constraints.  Temporary structures in schools, such as trailers and portable classrooms, have frequently been associated with moisture and mold problems.

Suggestions for Reducing Mold Growth in Schools

Reduce Indoor Humidity

  • Vent showers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside.
  • Control humidity levels and dampness by using air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
  • Provide adequate ventilation to maintain indoor humidity levels between 30-60%.
  • Use exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning in food service areas.

Inspect the Building for Signs of Mold, Moisture, Leaks or Spills

  • Check for mold-like odors.
  • Look for water stains or discoloration on the ceiling, walls, floors, and window sills.
  • Look around and under sinks for standing water, water stains, or mold.
  • Inspect bathrooms for standing water, water stains, or mold.
  • Do not let water stand in air conditioning or refrigerator drip pans.

Respond Promptly When You See Signs of Moisture and/or Mold, or When Leaks or Spills Occur

  • Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours of occurrence to prevent mold growth.
  • Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  • Absorbent materials that contain mold, such as ceiling tiles, may need to be replaced.
  • Check mechanical rooms and roof for unsanitary conditions, leaks or spills.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PAat (610) 352-0700

Prevent Moisture Condensation

  • Add insulation to reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e. windows, piping, exterior walls, or floors).

Floor and Carpet Cleaning

  • Remove spots and stains immediately, using the flooring manufacturer’s recommended techniques.
  • Use care to prevent excess moisture or cleaning residue accumulation, and ensure that cleaned areas are dried quickly.
  • Do not install carpeting in areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem (i.e. near drinking fountains, classroom sinks or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).

Commercial Mold Remediation

Mold infestations can be caused by minor water intrusions like a slow roof leak or loose plumbing fitting. Every hour spent cleaning up is an hour of lost revenue and productivity. If you suspect your school has a mold problem, call SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA, who will respond quickly and work fast to manage the situation.

Commercial Mold Remediation Presents Unique Challenges

Mold can spread quickly through a property if left untreated. SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA can respond quickly, working to first contain the contamination to help prevent its spread to other parts of the building.  Next, we will begin the remediation process, working safely and effectively to manage the situation.  We have the training, experience, and equipment to contain the mold infestation and remediate it to its preloss condition.

The Best Ways to Control Mold Growth is to Control Moisture

Mold is part of the natural environment and can be found everywhere, indoors and outdoors.  It is not usually a problem unless it begins growing indoors.  The best way to control mold growth is to control moisture.

Here are a few tips regarding mold and moisture in homes, schools, multi-family and commercial buildings.  Mold can have a big impact on indoor air quality.

  1. Always seek advice from a professional if you have more than ten square feet of mold, and always use the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure your safety.
  2. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in an indoor environment. The way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
  3. If mold is a problem in your home or school, one must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  4. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside.
    • Using air conditioners and/or dehumidifiers.
    • Increasing ventilation.
    • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning.
  1. Clean and dry damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  2. Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces by adding insulation (i.e. windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors).
  3. In areas of perpetual moisture, do not install carpeting (i.e. near drinking fountains, classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
  4. Mold can be found almost anywhere. It can grow on virtually any substance, providing that moisture is present (i.e. wood, paper, carpet, food).

Mold Is Present Almost Everywhere, Indoors & Outdoors.

Mold is a big problem in most homes, but many people are unaware of the problem. Most people think of the shower curtain, under the sink, or in the basement when they think about mold issues, but mold can grow anywhere. Mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere. It can be found in drywall, in a leaking roof, and even in a Christmas tree. Most of the time, a low level of mold will have little effect on you. However, if you are allergic to mold or you suffer from asthma or other respiratory problems, the presence of mold in your home can be particularly bothersome. Exposure to indoor mold can prevent a serious health risk.

Five Most Common Indoor Molds Are:

Alternaria:

Commonly found in your nose, mouth, and upper respiratory tract; can cause allergic responses.

Aspergillus:

Usually found in warm, extremely damp climates, and a common occupant of house dust; produces mycotoxins; can cause lung infections.

Cladosporium:

This very common outdoor fungus can find its way indoors to grow on textiles, wood, and other damp, porous materials; triggers hay fever and asthma symptoms.

Penicillium:

Very common species found on wallpaper, decaying fabrics, carpet, and fiberglass duct insulation; known for causing allergies and asthma; some species produce mycotoxins, one being the common antibiotic penicillin.

Stachybotrys:

Extremely toxic “black mold” that produces mycotoxins that can cause serious breathing difficulties and bleeding of the lungs, among other health problems. Thankfully, less common in homes than the other four, but not rare; found on wood or paper (cellulose products), but NOT on concrete, linoleum or tile.

Mold Remediation and Restoration

When a home suffers a water damage event, a mold infestation can quickly arise and spread throughout a home in 48-72 hours. Understanding Mold and the Remediation Process

Mold Removal vs. Mold Remediation

What’s the Difference?

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy. We understand mold and mold growth. SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

The Mold Remediation Process

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. Learn more about our mold remediation process.

Mold In Children's Bath Toys: Havertown, PA

6 Ways to Properly Clean Your Children’s Toys to Remove Mold

Mold and bath toys often go hand in hand. When the warm water is left to sit inside the tub toy, it provides a warm, moist environment for mold to grow. Unfortunately, in many cases, it is nearly impossible to remove this mold. It is safest to replace the moldy toys with new toys. These tips may help with cleaning your toys and get them free of mold.

Boil The Toys In Water:

  • Place your child’s toys in a pot of boiling water
  • Squeeze to drain the water from the toys making sure to remove all mold
  • Lay each toy out to dry and cool down

Clean With Vinegar

  • Mix one gallon of water and ½ cup of white vinegar
  • Soak toys in the mixture for one hour
  • Squeeze to drain the water from the toys making sure to remove all mold
  • Scrub thoroughly
  • Lay each toy out to dry
  • If the toys still smell like vinegar, rinse them off and lay them out to dry again

Soak Them In Bleach

  • Mix one gallon of water and ¾ cups of bleach in a bucket
  • Allow the toys to soak overnight
  • Remove the toys from the solution and squeeze to drain the water from the toys making sure to remove all mold
  • Rinse with water
  • Lay each toy out to dry

Cover The Holes

Some bath toys have holes in them to allow your kids to squirt water or make squeaky noises. While this might be entertaining, it also allows the toys to store water and grow mold.

  • When you are sure the toys are thoroughly dry, plug up the hole with a drop of hot glue

Run Through The Washer

A simple solution to remove the mold from toys is running them through the dishwasher or washing machine. It’s an easy way to get the job done.

Rinse With Hydrogen Peroxide

  • Mix two parts water and one part hydrogen peroxide in a bucket or spray bottle
  • Soak or spray toys to sanitize them
  • Scrub thoroughly
  • Rinse with water
  • Lay each toy out to dry

Prevention Is Key:

Here are some things to consider to avoid future mold problems.

  • While the bleach will kill any bacteria inside, this works much better as a preventive measure than a cleaning method. By cleaning the toys periodically from the beginning, mold can be avoided from the start.
  • After each use, squeeze the toys out completely to remove all of the water.
  • Store toys in an open area that allows them to dry completely between uses.
  • Avoid piling wet toys together in a bucket or basket as this limits the amount of air that can circulate, leaving the toys wet much longer than necessary. This extended period of moisture invites mold growth.

Mold Remediation?

Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA for Cleanup and Solutions

Mold is much like fire and water, a little bit that is under control is normally no cause for great concern. That all changes when humidity becomes too high for more than a couple of days. That is all it takes for mold to grow rapidly and then result in noticeable damage.

In your Delaware County, PA home, mold damage might remain unseen if it is in a hidden area. Dark and hidden locations that are rarely seen are favorite locations for mold. Sunlight can kill mold, if the time mold colonies are exposed to it is long enough. Even when finding it while cleaning or searching for a hidden box of items in storage, the damage itself might not readily be apparent until cleaning reveals what the mold itself was hiding.

A malfunctioning or non-existent dehumidifier can be the cause, as can leaking water lines, or moisture is seeping in through the basement's floors or walls. Overflowing tubs and other basins that were not completely fixed in the past can also be responsible for current problems with microbes, including mildew and other forms of fungi. Correcting the humidity in a home is crucial to successful mold remediation. Otherwise, the problem can soon return.

Cleaning is not enough to remove mold. Areas that are severely damaged must be cut away and replaced, and this demolition must be done with care. Sections of your home that have evidence of problems from microbial activity require tarping up of doorways to prevent the spread of mold into uncontaminated areas. Our technicians receive IICRC training in both remediation and the use of personal protection equipment.

Because mold spores are so small, they cannot be seen by the naked eye. We use air scrubbers to clean the air while we are working, as this has been shown to reduce the number found in the air significantly. In addition to this, finding the leak or another source of moisture is paramount toward preventing future situations from developing (Secondary Damage). Adding a low-maintenance dehumidifier to your home is another service we can assist with, and this can considerably decrease the chance of a recurring problem.
